Finding community was something we knew would be a challenge on the road. It can be hard to make new friends when everyone is always moving on to the next place.
Sometimes the kids meet some friends who overlap with our stay for a day or two and they get to play together a bit before one family hits the road. Sometimes we meet people who we end up running into again down the road at another campground because we are following similar routes. Sometimes we make friends who take us crabbing and share fresh crab with us for days.
But up until this last week we had not met a whole group of families, a whole community of fellow full-time travelers, all camped right in the same little section of our campground. We had just set up camp and were going on a short walk around the campground when we met a dad with kids similar ages to ours. He told us about all the great families camping around us and immediately welcomed us into the group.
For the next week the kids threw footballs, played soccer, and practiced tricks on skateboards, bikes and scooters. On rainy days they played with legos and built forts. There were pizza nights, potlucks and even a double birthday party. And most evenings us parents gathered around the campfire to exchange stories of where we have traveled, places we have seen, and mistakes and lessons we have learned about RV life along the way.
Though we are all from different places and have different backgrounds, these are the type of friends who feel like you have known for years, and know you will meet again. The hardest part about meeting friends like this is saying goodbye so I think instead we will just say "See you down the road."
